I think questions like these and other “dumb” questions reflect how the human psychology works

a lot of peoples’ casual understanding on topics work by making associations of topics that the person considers to be similar/related
when it becomes their professional field and they need to draw logical inferences then the mind works different on that topic,
but even those engineering-oriented people do often default back into this “dumb” way of thinking for fields in which they don’t have a full picture/don’t understand well/don’t have all the information

i’ve spent almost all my life triyng to minimize this type of information friction for people who can’t be bothered to sit down and learnn about some aspect of life that is not a priority for them for one reason or another so this is is super familiar to me

idk if this is a good example to illustrate thiss, but
like the other day I discovered that “현미” (brown rice in korean language) and “brown rice” are the same thing
I discovered this after like 20+ days of hearing the two words, in very separate, isolated worlds. One is a Korean-speaking world where people discuss well-being and healthy eating, and the other is English-speaking Thai restaurants.
then yesterday I went to a Korean supermarket, and bought brown rice, and noticed that it says “현미” and “brown rice” in the same bag

    i was like :aMindBlown:

    > uhm. what do you need sponsors for? Like what do we do for them, and what do they do for us? I know this is a dumb question but I’m trying to figure out what to ask

I didn’t read your original post but from the responses it sounds like you are organizing a.. Computer Science Fair?
in an event like that, a sponsor would provide various kinds of material support, and usually get recognized for being a sponsor
being a sponsor of an event can be different things

    • outright giving you money to pay for the costs of the event, or for the event’s beneficiacy (if you are trying to raise money for an issue, etc)
    • having their rep with a booth passing out their own promo at your event site/answering questions
    • bringing free stuff to the event for the event organizer or participants – for example cans of soda from their store, free tshirts (or maybe you’ll sell the tshirts to participants), etc

more organized events establish “Tiers” of Sponsorship Level, eg you give us $10,000 and then your company logo will be prominently displayed on the event entrance, but if you give us $2,000 then your logo will only be printed on our event pamphlet, etc
but if it’s a small event organized by one person i guess you can negotiate the sponsorship terms – what they will give you, and what how you will show your gratitude or promote them – individually
sometimes sponsors are lowkey and humble and don’t want to get public recognition.. and that s fine to

    > In Korena language “black person” is “흑인” .. I think in korean it has a different context. Can you confirm yongho?

    so
    Koreans are so racist
they don’t realize that saying “black person”, “black-owned” is neutral – that it’s not racist.
because all their lives, they have never heard the word “black person” (흑인) in a non-racist context
it’s usually “blacks are violent” “blacks are on the rampage again after a black prostitute died during police action” “be careful in ktown, too many blacks there”
so if you say “oh yeah so silicon valley is hiring more black people” or something random like that they will automatically assume that you are trying to make a racist point – eg the subtext of what you said being “silicon valley is hiring underqualified blacks, these CEOs are so stupid and populist. they need to hire based on merits, not give handouts to the N humans” – that’s the subtext that will be assumed when you say it using the word “black”
so that’s why some people think that saying African American is more “PC” and say the pronunciation of “African America” out loud with Korean letters
yeah.. maybe in the 50’s bro

on the other hand, there is a separate korean word equivalent of the N word. It’s 깜둥이
I had a bit of a Korean moment a few months ago
when this guy was trying to tell parents that his friends’ is a black/korean couple, and their baby is black and korean
but in his limited korean language vocabulary, he couldn’t remember the word “black person” (흑인) – he could only remember the N word
because that’s the only word that all the Korean-speaking people around him ever said, I imagine
so he was trying to portray something positive about black people (that the baby was cute), but he was limited to the N word
    Korean moment right there

so MetroLink sent this email today morning saying they are running their trains more frequently

this is the line that I cared about:
    > Orange County Line: Two trains offer added weekday morning service.

so I went to the MetroLink website to look it up
    their website crashed
    :yikes:
after a few minutes, I was able to look it up
    but…
    this can’t be real
I don’t see more morning service
but I see them going crazy crazy crazy during afternoon rush hour

during the pandemic, they were running once an hour, or once every two hours

now they are running every 10 minutes or 15 minutes from 3pm until 6pm
    that can’t be real
like only MTA high-density special transportation zone buses run that often during rush hour
why are trains running on that kind of schedule
i understand they got a lot of money through the Build Back Better economic stimulus package
    but this…
I would look at this and assume they are trying to launder drug money
    :pepecigarette:
or their website data entry intern did something very wrong

some of my amazon non-rush credits are to expire tomorrow
i was eyeing a book i saw someone recommend on twitter
    it was listed at $10
    i have $7.50 in credits
i was hoping some of the restraints would ship earlier and add to my credits
and i was browsing the book again today, and the moment i shifted to the paperback tab to see if they had used books, amazon lowered the price from $10 to $8
maybe it’s an algorithm to entice you with a discount if they know you are very interested in a kindle book
    so got it for $0.50

Korea elected its first Incel President
there are so many hilarities with this outcome results
the Incel president won by a 0.8% difference
the number 3 candidate, the progressive candidate, got 2%

however, the Incel president likely got 1% more votes, which got lost because the former number 3 candidate withdrew last week and threw his support behind Incel, but the voters didn’t realize he withdrew so they still voted for him. That’s a whole ass 1% of the votes

now the guy who scored number 4 is something
I say the winner was the Korean Trump
but number 4 is the real Trump
    Number 4 promises:

    • dissolving congress by martial law
    • purchasing russian territory and some nuclear reactors and weapons along with it
    • free money for young people and seniors

that guy has been running on that platform for 20+ years now.

    among other things
that meme candidate scored number four, with 0.8% of the votes, or 280,000 votes

    > is it just the 20 yr olds being incels?

Yeah the incels got their candidate
They sided with the conservatives, super-rich multi real estate owners, corporations, homophobes, dictatorship supporters, etc, so that they can push back against the supposed “men-haters” and “solve the gender tensions” by “ensuring men are treated fairly at the same level as “females” ”

    > bc the women can immediately get hired for jobs? and the dudes gotta do their service?

    They have many grievances
“why does the man have to replace the water filter machines’ water bottle in our company office, and why don’t the women do that? So unfair”
    This water filter machine

    > lol. because its heavy

he got that last oomph from Ahn Chul Soo
Ahn Chul Soo was originally number 3 in support rate, but dropped out last week and threw his support behind the Conservatives
Ahn Chul Soo brought over his 5% of supporters
Ahn Chul Soo had so much support, that about 1% of the votes were votes cast mostly for Ahn Chul Soo, but those votes became invalid because he withdrew and is no longer a candidate

i’m not impressed by that tiktoker’s 2 second of “singing”

    https://www.tiktok.com/@sweetfilipina/video/7069638517621640490?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1

i think that clip reflects the view of people without a sense of music that think being bold and showing character in their speaking/enunciation – which actually has more to do with acting, which of course comes in handy in a good musical performance – to be synonymous with singing “skill”

because they can’t break down the components of singing into its constituent elements

    > Why is she so personal with these insults tho:kek~1:

    pretty standard for koreans
they have a very, very narrow definition in all aspects of life (physical, mental, lifestyle, culture, income, thoughts) of what is considered the NORMAL range
    the moment you deviate
    they start asking
    “why?”
“so short. did she grow up in a war torn country?”
“guy clothes? is she a feminist”

“get back to the pack with the rest of us”

if you look at Korean TV shows
the moment someone who deviates from the norm shows up on screen
it’s like everyone know what are the questions popping up in everyone’s head
“why does this guy not have a mother?”
“why are those two so dark when they are from the United States”
“that guy says he’s from California but he has an indian accent. I’m so confused”
    so no one is asking
but they spend the next hour
    just addressing those questions

“his parents immigrated from India in the 1980s, you see”
“ooooohhhh I seeeeee” (that explains everything)
    “ohhh interestingggggg”
even TV programs directed to young people
    it’s always the same

man i will forever be scarred with that day when my mexican twitch viewer asked me
“uh ok so you are protestant…”
“do you guys believe in God?”
    “and Jesus?”

another thing that shocked me about that mexican twitch viewer is that he called himself a “catholic”, not “christian”
i thought labeling protestants as christians and Catholics as catholics was something that only Korean protestants engaged in, to push catholicism to the margins
i thought catholics in latin america wouold call themselves “christians”
and give some label to protesttants.. the usual one seems to be “evangelicals”
but why is that mexican catholic guy calling himself “catholic” instead of “christian”
and he got confused when I didn’t adopt that “christian” label, which I did not adopt out of respect to catholics

    > that always confused me as well, cuz the catholic church was the og christian church in the west

yeah there’s that historical precedent too
but in latin america, catholicism is the mainstream religion
the “default” religion if you don’t have anything else going for you
so why would latin american catholics not lay claim to the “christian” label?

    > Do you guys speak in tongues?

Presbyterians generally tend to not be too hot into the whole miracles and speaking in tongues thing, although that varies from church to church
Pentecostal-aligned denominations are more into that
and Presbyterians stand diametrically on the opposite end of that emotional axis from Pentecostals
the running joke about Presbyterians is
“how many Presbyterians do you need to replace your light bulb?”
“not sure about that but they will be happy to get their building infrastructure committee involved, and form exploratory subcommittees, evaluation subcommittees, and many more as deemed needed to duly carry out the task of bulb replacement
