i also got an extra 150k. My rewards activity tab does not explain it. All I see is that my BBP got a 150k “adjustment” in 2023. (It shows up on the annual summary, to the right hand side on the website). Nowhere in the itemized rewards list does the 150k show up. It just showed up at some point in mid-July.
In January 2023, I thought I met my 150k Amex Business Platinum SUB after spending $15,700. But the 150k was not showing up for over a week. I called Amex. They told me yes you met the $15k spend, it can take up to 12 weeks, all I can do is wait they said. I called again in March. They said that some of the purchases did not qualify, and that after disqualifying those, I only spent $14,800. My 3-month deadline had passed in Feb 2nd.
That was March 2023. Then suddenly 150k showed up in my account. Today I also got an email from Amex saying that they fixed a mistake they did with my points. (Same email as this person) Nothing in the email did it specify how many points, which purchases, when those purchases happened. Just “oops my bad, it’s now fixed”
I’m not gonna call Amex. They already lied to me about meeting spend reqs, which led to me losing the sign up bonus. Why should I trust whatever fabrication they come up as explanation or whatever misinformed action they take in response to me volunteering the information?
I think people telling you that Amex will charge you the cash equivalent of these points are wrong. It is not your responsibilty to keep track of how many points you earned exactly. That’s their job. That’s why they reserve the right to take away any of your points at any moment for any reason.
Busy people running businesses and making money and spending money have no time to be looking at their amex tab and keeping track of shit. They spend money, book trips, and sometimes look at their points balance and spend it towards their trips or \*gasp\* gift cards. It’s a continuous ebb and flow of points.
Those people are not responsible for knowing whether they deserve or not a 300k mistake. They are just gonna spend it and Amex is not gonna hold them responsibile for not doubling as a MR accountant at night. Can you imagine this shit? “Mr Bill Gates, uh.. we made a mistake and gave you 5 million points instead of 4 million, and you spent it all even though you knew that you didn’t earn it. So here’s a bill for $10,000 for us to recoup the costs.”
That would be ridiculous. Amex would never do that. So why should peasants like us keep track of this shit?
If they accidentally give you 300k, and you spend it all, the worst Amex can do is to put a negative 300k point balance on your account. And your MR earnings from that point on will slowly build back on from that negative balance until you reach 0 and start growing to positive again. Or if you stop using Amex altogether afterwards, maybe they will close your cards. They can’t bill you for the points that they put on your account for you to use. I would bet that that’s not in the T&C.
I’m gonna pretend I’m not aware of any of this and continue to use my points balance normally for trips. I am tempted to transfer it all out during a transfer promo, but I think I may regret it if the specific airline I transfer it to (Air Canada) ends up massively devaluing.
